Cloclks and watches are the two latest devices for telling what time it is. Clocks are about 600 years old, and watches about 400 years old, but other devices for keeping time go back thousands of years. in the modern world nearly everything depends on accurate timekeeping - in some scientific works the time must be accurate within a small fraction of a second- but as recently as 50 years ago it was almost unheard-of for the farmer and the laboring man to carry a watch and usuakky they did not have clocks in their hous.
