This Monograph is a compilation of six country essays on the subject of Architecture, each represents an aspect of the cultural heritage of the original members of the Association of the South East Asian Nations or ASEAN namely: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,Thailand and Singapore. This publication represents efforts by my learned colleagues who together with me, met at the ASEAN Publication Series (Phase 1) Conference for Scholars and Editors on the 18th-20th July 1995 at Langkawi, Malaysia. This is the first time that a study of Architecture of the ASEAN region has been undertaken as a Monograph and it possibly is the only attempt of its kind in the region. The approaches are diverse as are the language structure and style; each essay is also marked by particular nuances and emphases. I settled on a decision that these differences should be respected as long as the writing is consistent. The editorial process has also become involved with the fact that some essays were shorter then expected.
