Printed Book
Encyclopaedia Britanica Volume 20
The preface to the first edition of Encylopaedia Britanica, 1768 stated that utility is the principal intention of every publication. The Britanica's progresive history since that date has been one of expansion and enlargment, and the problem has been to hold the developing amount of information to a convenient and usable form. Times change, fresh information demands inclusion, and supplementary volumes added to old ones offer no adequete solution of the problem of keeping the reader abreast of the times, nor, indeed, do completely reset new edition solve the problem. such editions in the past have taken many years to make, and material in one volume was old before the next volume was made.
