Geology and Change
Of all the planets in the Solar System, Earth alone had the good fortune to form neither too close to the Sun nor too far away from it. As a result, Earth became the only planet with temperatures that permit the existence of abundant liquid water.
These wet, moderate conditions were ideal for the development of various life forms, the first of which appeared just 1.5 billion years or so after the planet's creation. Aeons and aeons of evolution eventually produced intelligent beings who began to wonder about the place they called home. More than 2,000 years ago, for example, Greek philosophers deduced that Earth was a sphere; final proof of this came when Magellan's ships circumnavigated the globe in the sixteenth century. And in the twentieth century, satellite views like the one at right revealed the planet as a beautiful blue orb floating in space.
